Autism Reality Experience at The Westborough School

On 14th January 2026, The Westborough School proudly welcomed the Autism Reality Experience bus, an innovative and inspirational training initiative designed to give participants a virtual experience of living with autism. This hands-on, immersive session provided staff with a unique opportunity to gain deeper insight into the sensory and cognitive challenges faced by autistic individuals, helping us see the world from their perspective.

A total of 44 members of staff took part in this impactful experience, which was organised by Katishe Macey (SENCO) as part of the Partnership for Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) programme that Westborough actively participates in. This initiative reflects Westborough’s strong commitment to inclusion, professional development, and creating an environment where every child can thrive.

Here’s what staff had to say about the experience:

Headteacher, Tonya Brook:
"What a great way to experience the world through the eyes of somebody with autism. We had to carry out tasks while having our senses overloaded which I can say was very difficult, as for remembering the three tasks given, I only remembered one! It was a very powerful experience to get this message across."

Year 6 Teacher, Laurel Chambers:
"A really enlightening experience! Truly seeing and feeling what it is like to be in someone else’s shoes. I feel I have a better understanding having this immersive experience, which will impact my teaching practice, classroom environment and personal life."

 Reception Teacher, Michelle Lane
“An experience that helped me see and feel what life is like for someone with autism and will stay with me as I teach.”

The Autism Reality Experience, delivered by Training2Care, is widely recognised for its practical approach to fostering empathy and awareness. It is suitable for professionals across all sectors, including educators, family members, and carers who want to gain a better understanding of autism.
