Cornelius Vermuyden Praised for Rapid Improvement
Following an Ofsted visit in March, Cornelius Vermuyden School has been praised for its rapid improvement.
The monitoring inspection, which took place on 3rd and 4th March 2026, recognised that ‘pupils have a school that they are proud to belong to.’
Inspectors highlighted improvements in all areas of school life.
Leadership and governance
Finally, pupils have a school that they are proud to belong to. Positive relationships have been forged between staff and pupils. Pupils now trust staff to help them when they have worries or concerns. Older pupils have chosen to take responsibility to look out for and support younger ones. Pupils are now beginning to thrive. Leaders’ actions have secured an ethos of a warm, caring community. The ‘US’ in Cornelius shines bright.
Safeguarding

Inclusion
Leaders have ensured that the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are swiftly identified…Teachers are provided with detailed information that helps them consider how best to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of pupils with SEND. As a result, pupils with SEND enjoy coming to school.
Achievement
The improvements to the curriculum and how it is taught are starting to help pupils learn key knowledge. Younger pupils in particular are now securing key foundational knowledge in English and mathematics.
Attendance and behaviour

Classrooms are calm spaces where learning can happen without disruption. Between lessons and at social times pupils move about carefully. They are considerate of other pupils’ personal space. The school is a calm, orderly, pleasant space. Pupils enjoy coming to school.
Curriculum and teaching
The curriculum has continued to develop. It is ambitious. Leaders have continued to increase teachers’ knowledge. This has seen a continual improvement to the quality of teaching.
Headteacher Dee Conlon said:
“Inspectors recognise that the school has made clear and sustained improvements, particularly in behaviour, safeguarding and what it is like to be a pupil at the school, since the last inspection in 2023.
I am incredibly proud of our pupils and staff and the progress we have made together, and I look forward to achieving even more as a community.”
Andrew Cooper, CEO of the South East Essex Academy Trust, commented:
