Cornelius Vermuyden School makes significant strides towards improvement

A recent visit from one of His Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) in July has highlighted significant progress, and several positive developments at Cornelius Vermuyden School. 

The HMI report comments on the swift and decisive actions taken since SEEAT assumed leadership of the school in April 2024 with the restructuring of the leadership team and the rapid implementation of a detailed school improvement plan ‘already having a positive impact on pupils' experiences.’ 

Crucially, the school is fully staffed for the autumn term, a major improvement from past recruitment challenges. The report notes that ‘many teachers have strong subject knowledge.’ 

The clear vision for the curriculum, shaped by SEEAT's standards, is ensuring ‘ambitious’ learning opportunities across all subjects. 

The HMI report also noted improvements in behaviour and safeguarding, with students now feeling safer and more supported, describing the school as ‘a warmer and more inclusive place.’ 

The report also comments that ‘the school is benefiting from the innovative partnership’ led by SEEAT with Zenith Multi Academy Trust and Basildon Academies Trust. ‘Working together with a strong, shared moral purpose they are helping the school make the improvements needed.’ 

Executive Headteacher, Desi McKeown, commented: 
"We are pleased with the progress noted during the HMI visit. Our staff, governors, and students are working incredibly hard to create a positive, inclusive environment. School improvement takes time, but we are confident that we are on the right path, and the continued support of our community is invaluable."
